The Israeli government uses a first-ever joint cabinet meeting with a German government on German soil to press Berlin into supporting more sanctions against Iran over its nuclear aims. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's PM, said Tehran had shown its "true face" when suppressing domestic opponents and that it could easily come to "tyrannise" other states, too.
"If we don't apply sanctions, crippling sanctions against this Iranian tyranny, when shall we apply them?" he asked at a press conference in Berlin. "If not now, when? The answer is now". Germany and the five permanent rolex fake members of the UN Security Council - US, China, Russia, France and Britain - are in talks about how to get Iran to allay fears about its nuclear programme. While Tehran says its nuclear programme will generate electricity for civilian use, the six major powers fear the regime could use it to make nuclear weapons, threatening Israel's existence. The process is tricky for Angela Merkel, German chancellor, who on Jan 18 again stressed Germany's "historical responsibility" for Israel's safety and its strong trading ties with Iran. While agreeing with the US-led call for economic sanctions, Germany has always tried to keep Russia and China on board, partly for fear, according to analysts, of losing Iranian business to these countries. But Ms Merkel on Jan 18 said that Germany had "made it clear" that if Iran's blocking of a nuclear deal did not end, "we will be working on a replica rolex comprehensive package of sanctions". She said Germany sill preferred sanctions to be agreed "within the framework of the United Nations Security Council" - that is, together with potential trading rivals Russia and China. But she also said Germany would back sanctions "with other countries that are pursuing the same goal" - a nod to the US and Israel, which want action even outside the UN framework. Ending the second German-Israeli government consultations, Ms Merkel spoke of modern Germany's "good fortune" of close ties to Israel given the horrors of the Nazi-era Holocaust. The first top-level meeting of both cabinets took place in March 2008, which included the first-ever speech by a German head of government to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. Then, as on Jan 18, Ms Merkel was pressed about trading ties with Iran, and she in return criticised Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and called for peace talks with the wholesale colthing Palestinians. Ms Merkel on Jan 18 spoke of "this window of opportunity" for talks - to which Netanyahu replied: "I am ready for peace and I hope the Palestinians will show equal readiness".
